Abstract
The incidence of overweight, obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is on the rise in India at a concerning rate. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate and present the occurrence of overall obesity, abdominal obesity encompassing both intra-abdominal and subcutaneous fat accumulation and other related factors in the young adult population. In this cross-sectional study of 234 participants, anthropometric measurements (BMI, WC, skinfold thickness), FBG levels and blood pressure were recorded. Parameters related to body fat (BF), including TAF, IAAT and SCAT, as well as BMR, were assessed using predictive equations. Statistical analyses (t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation) were conducted, with a significance level of p<0.05. The study found a prevalence of 10.52% for generalized obesity (GO) based on BMI. Abdominal obesity, assessed by WC and TAF, had prevalences of 13.25 and 8.55%, respectively. IAAT and SCAT were observed in 16.24 and 25.64% of participants, respectively. Impaired fasting glucose, MetS and hypertension had prevalences of 19.33, 5.50 and 6% (SBP)/13% (DBP), respectively. Predictive BMR was higher in obese individuals compared to healthy individuals. Findings of our study indicate a concerning trend of increasing overweight and obesity rates, which can have significant implications for individuals' health and well-being. Public health efforts should focus on raising awareness about the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, promoting regular physical activity and encouraging a balanced diet.
