Abstract

This review thoroughly examines the role of epigenetic regulations in both normal placental development and preeclampsia (PE), a significant placental disorder. We discuss the latest advancements in understanding the effects of DNA methylation, non‐coding RNA (particularly long non‐coding RNA (lncRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) and, to a lesser extent, histone post‐translational modifications on normal and aberrant placental function. Additionally, we investigate the potential of using circulating epigenetic marks in maternal blood as biomarkers for predicting PE onset and assessing its severity. The relationship between epigenetic marks and their impact on gene expression is systematically analyzed for each type of epigenetic modification studied.
