Abstract

This autopsy based study “A study of the Intracranial haemorrhages and skull fractures in Road traffic accident cases brought to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Mortuary, Guwahati, Assam for Medico-legal Autopsy”, was conducted to find out the different types of intracranial haemorrhages and skull fractures, over a period of one year from 1st July 2013 to 30th June 2014. This study was cross-sectional descriptive study. During this period a total number of 3034 Medico-legal autopsies were performed in the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, Assam which were brought by police from within the district administrative area of Kamrup, Assam and few referral cases from the neighboring districts. During this one year period, a total of 3034 medico-legal autopsies were performed, out of which, alleged vehicular accident cases were 952. i.e. 31.38% of total number of cases. Study showed that a total of 744 cases out of 952 vehicular accident cases were associated with intracranial haemorrhages. 400 cases were associated with skull fractures. After analyzing the data it was evident from the figure that a total of 90 cases out of 744 cases, went through surgical intervention.
