Abstract

India is home to numerous endemic fungal illnesses and it is a common occurrence for certain pathogens that are prevalent worldwide to be regularly identified in this region. Nevertheless, there has been a lack of comprehensive efforts to accurately assess the overall fungal load in this nation, which is home to a population exceeding 1.3 billion individuals. Therefore, this study was conducted to measure the awareness and perception of fungal infection and prevention. A survey was done among medical students enrolled in the 6‐year modular undergraduate medical program at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The curriculum consists of 2 years of fundamental sciences followed by 4 years of clinical training. The survey utilized a validated questionnaire and employed a cross‐sectional interview‐based approach. The composition of the study group consisted of 73 medical students, which accounted for 42.94% of the overall student population of 170. Table 1 displays the attributes of the students who provided responses. Out of the total number of answers, 31 individuals, accounting for 48.44% of the sample, demonstrated awareness regarding the necessity of adhering to conventional isolation measures as a fundamental prerequisite for providing care to all patients, regardless of their specific diagnosis. The study highlights a lack of sufficient understanding, awareness and adherence to infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines among students at Sri Krishna medical college and hospital Bihar. The reduction of healthcare‐associated infections (HCAIs) can only be achieved through the implementation of comprehensive educational programs for future healthcare workers (HCWs).
